South Africa Plans 4.6 GW of Battery Storage to Strengthen Electricity Supply

South Africa Accelerates Battery Energy Storage Plans

South Africa is accelerating its energy-storage plans, creating new opportunities for businesses to improve energy resilience and make better use of renewable power.

The government is preparing to procure 4.6 GW of battery energy storage and 5 GW of gas-fired power generation as part of the first allocations under its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2025. Announced in October 2026, the initiative aims to improve electricity reliability, reduce renewable energy curtailment and support the country's changing energy needs.

The IRP 2025 outlines plans to add more than 105 GW of new electricity generation capacity by 2039, including 25 GW of solar power, as South Africa gradually reduces its reliance on coal.

Why Battery Storage Matters

As more renewable energy enters the electricity system, battery storage is becoming increasingly important. Solar power generation can exceed demand at certain times of the day, while electricity demand may rise when solar production decreases.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) help address this challenge by storing surplus electricity and releasing it when needed. This can improve the use of available renewable energy, support grid stability and help reduce wasted generation.

Under the government's plans, battery storage will be deployed where it can effectively absorb surplus electricity and discharge when the power system requires it. Procurement will also consider system availability, performance and the requirements of the electricity system operator.

Gas-fired power plants are expected to complement storage by providing dispatchable electricity when renewable generation falls or demand increases. Battery storage and gas generation serve different roles in supporting a more flexible electricity system.

A Growing Market for Solar and Storage

South Africa has already taken steps to establish a utility-scale battery storage market. Previous public procurement rounds have awarded projects with capacities of 513 MW, 615 MW and 616 MW respectively.

Private-sector investment is also expanding, with hybrid solar and battery projects demonstrating how renewable generation and storage can work together to supply electricity more reliably.

Although the first allocations under IRP 2025 focus on battery storage and gas-to-power, the government says a subsequent determination will address additional solar and wind capacity, including hybrid projects that combine renewable generation with energy storage.

What This Means for Businesses

The expansion of battery storage reinforces an important development in the energy sector: generating electricity is only part of the solution. Storing and managing that electricity effectively is also essential.

For businesses, solar and battery systems can help support operations during power interruptions, improve energy management and reduce dependence on grid electricity when designed appropriately for their needs.

A well-designed solar and battery installation can help businesses:

  • Maintain power to essential equipment and operations during interruptions, within the system's available capacity.
  • Store surplus solar electricity for use when solar generation decreases.
  • Manage peak electricity demand and improve energy-use planning.
  • Reduce grid electricity consumption where solar generation and storage meet on-site demand.
  • Support sustainability objectives by making greater use of renewable energy.

The right solution depends on factors such as electricity consumption, peak loads, required backup duration, available installation space and budget. Businesses should assess these requirements before selecting an inverter, battery bank and solar array.
